What is HarmonyOS ?
HarmonyOS is Huawei's newest operating system for IoT devices and smartphones. HarmonyOS is called HongmengOS in China and has been rumoured to replace Android OS. Huawei at its Developer Conference on Friday announced HarmonyOS, its newest operating system that also goes by the name HongmengOS in China.
HarmonyOS was rumoured to replace Android in Huawei and Honor smartphones, but the company confirmed that it will still rely on Google's operating system, at least for now. As of now, HarmonyOS is primarily going to be seen running on connected devices such as smart TVs and smart speakers. The first product to run on HarmonyOS will likely be Honor's Smart TV that will be announced on Saturday, August 10. Huawei has been working on its in-house HarmonyOS for a few years now as a fall back in case US blocked the company's access to Google's Android OS.
Richard Yu, CEO of Huawei's Consumer Business Group, said at HDC 2019 that HarmonyOS is ready to run on smartphones, but the company will still rely on Android for now. He added that if Huawei is unable to use Android OS, HarmonyOS will be ready for deployment.
The company is also calling HarmonyOS more powerful than Android. HarmonyOS will be open source like Android, which means developers will be able to use and modify the operating system as per their preference.
